Regulated family crests and heraldry began early in the United States of America and was just about to develop when it was cut short by the onset of the American Revolution. In 1586 was probably the beginning of heraldry and family crests  as at that time a grant was issued to the city of Raleigh in Virginia. The next real opportunity for the development of heraldry came with an appointment of Carolina Herald in the year of 1705. The particular patent shows the robes of scarlet embossed with gold and other marks of honor which was to be borne by the nobles of that province. The early part of the 18th century was totally devoid of granting family crest and arms to Americans till William Peepperell was created a Baronet in the year of 1746 although his father had gone over to New England about senety years previous and the arms was "Argent a Chevron Gules between three Pine Cones, Vert with augmentation of a Canton Gules charged with a Fluer-de-lis Argent.

In the year of 1768 a coat of arms and a family crest was granted to Daniel Heyward from the parish of St Luke in Granville County, Sth Carolina on the petition of his son and heir Thomas Heyward of Middle Temple and a pedigree was granted'

Sample family motto;
